Operation Smile Mission with the Bb. Pilipinas 2012 Candidates

Operation Smile Philippines brings back smile and hope to kids and adults alike conducting medical mission offering free cleft lip and cleft palate surgery at the Santa Ana Hospital in Manila. Out of the 52 patients who were evaluated, 41 successful surgeries were performed. Seven patients also received palatal obturator.

In cooperation with Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc., thirty candidates vying for the title Binibining Pilipinas 2012 spent two days giving support at both pre and post-operation. Led by Bb. Pilipinas 2011 and “Smile Ambassador” Shamsey Supsup, the hospital went into a frenzy as parents, volunteers, and patients have their photos taken with the beauties.

To celebrate its 30th anniversary since its first mission in Naga City, Operation Smile will conduct eight simultaneous missions across the Philippines to provide free reconstructive surgery to at least 1,500 Filipino children and young adults.

Here is a collection of photos from the mission.

Cagayan de Oro: One month after Sendong

Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental.

One month after ordeal, typhoon Sendong evacuees patiently wait for proper shelter and regular food rations. Sendong surprised the people in the early morning of Dec 17 with mud water that rose above 10feet high leaving hundreds of thousands affected and close to 30,000 people and displaced, staying in various evacuation centers across the region.

Some 200 victims were allowed to take up temporary shelter at the Provincial Capitol grounds with makeshift tents made of tarpaulin and wooden sticks. The death toll is at 1,257 while many more are still missing. Nevertheless, the survivors were thankful they pulled through this calamity and vowed to live on as they approach their daily affairs with heads held up high and full of hope.
